John-Michael Tebelak began his work on GODSPELL-a musical based on the Gospel

According to St. Matthew- as a graduate student at Carnegie-Mellon in Pittsburgh, PA.

It was intended as his Master’s thesis. Godspell with a new score written by Stephen Schwartz made its off-Broadway debut at the Cherry Lane Theatre May 17, 1971.

Praised by the critics for its skillful blend of pantomime, vaudeville, circus, revival meetings and minstrel shows, GODSPELL soon became an international success with productions mounted in London, Paris, Toronto, Boston, Washington, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Melbourne & Sydney, Australia.
